Lopwell Dam is a Local Nature Reserve consisting of several different habitats including saltmarsh, freshwater marsh and ancient semi-natural woodland.

Owned by South West Water and managed by South West Lakes Trust, this wildlife haven is found on the upper tidal mark of the River Tavy and provides an excellent site for bird watching, walking and cycling.

Lopwell Dam - constructed in 1953 to boost Plymouth's water supplies - is a tranquil spot on the River Tavy. The surrounding area (a Site of Special Scientific Interest and Local Nature Reserve) is known today for its plentiful wildlife, attracted by a range of habitats: woodland, marshes - freshwater above the dam, saltwater below - and mudflats.

About us The breathtaking Lopwell Dam on the upper tidal mark of the River Tavy is an excellent site for bird watching and walking. Located just 3 miles north of Plymouth and 7 miles from Tavistock, this wildlife haven is well worth a visit. Lopwell Dam is a designated Local Nature Reserve (LNR) covering an area of approximately 5 hectares.

Both sides of this river are in Devon with Lopwell Dam linking the Bere Peninsula to the 6,000 acre Maristow Estate, their land rises from the Tavy Estuary to around 600 feet above sea level making it the ideal terrain for game such as Pheasant, Partridge and Grouse to be reared, only to be shot later in the year..

-The original dam was constructed in 1953 by Plymouth City Council to create an additional water supply for the city. -Now a peaceful spot, Lopwell was originally a busy river quay, serving nearby mines and farmland dating back to the 13th century. -Before the dam was built, a ferry used to run from one side of the estuary to the other!
